Meruvai Chendaal Aditha Padalam (மேருவைச் செண்டால் அடித்த படலம்)

"Meruvai Chendaal Aditha Padalam" is the 15th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where Mount Meru was Struck with the Royal Scepter/Club." It is a fascinating story from the Madurai Kaandam that highlights how Lord Shiva came to the rescue of King Ukkira Pandiyan to relieve a severe famine by unlocking hidden divine wealth.

The Story

1. The Famine and the King's Distress

During the reign of Ukkira Pandiyan (the powerful son of Lord Somasundarar and Goddess Meenakshi/Tadatakai), the kingdom suffered a severe period of drought and failure of rains. Crops withered, and a massive famine gripped Madurai. The citizens were plunged into poverty and could no longer pay taxes or sustain themselves.

Deeply distressed by the suffering of his people, King Ukkira Pandiyan went to the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, fell at the feet of the Lord, and prayed earnestly for a way to feed and rescue his subjects.

2. The Divine Dream and the Hidden Treasure

That night, Lord Shiva appeared in the King's dream in the form of a Siddhar. The Lord revealed: "Do not despair. Near the cosmic Mount Meru in the north, there is a secret cave containing immense, inexhaustible wealth left behind by ancient divine treasures. Take your army, go to Mount Meru, and bring back the gold and riches to help your people."

The Lord also reminded the King to use the divine royal club (Chendu / Senthu) that had been previously gifted to him.

3. The Journey to Mount Meru

Ukkira Pandiyan immediately gathered his fourfold army and marched north toward the majestic Mount Meru. Upon reaching the vicinity of the divine mountain, he called out to it to yield the treasures as commanded by the Lord.

However, Mount Meru—puffed up with pride over its immense size and stability, and distracted by its own grandeur—ignored the King's call and delayed responding.

4. Striking the Mountain with the Club

Enraged by the mountain's arrogance and delay, Ukkira Pandiyan took the divine club (Chendu) given by Lord Shiva and flung it, striking the peak of Mount Meru with tremendous force.

The impact shook the entire mountain range. Overwhelmed by the divine power of the weapon, Mount Meru instantly lost its arrogance. It transformed its form, appearing with multiple shoulders and heads, holding a white umbrella, and humbly prostrating before the Pandyan King.

5. Acquiring the Wealth

Mount Meru begged for forgiveness, explaining that its pride and momentary distraction had caused the delay. Recognizing the King's divine mandate, the mountain willingly guided the Pandyan forces to the secret cave filled with gold, jewels, and precious resources.

King Ukkira Pandiyan collected the vast wealth, returned to Madurai, completely relieved the famine, and restored prosperity to his people.

Significance and Legacy

  • Humbled Pride: This chapter illustrates that even cosmic elements like Mount Meru cannot escape humbling when they allow pride (Ahamkaram) to override divine duty.

  • The Ruler's Responsibility: It underscores the absolute dedication of a righteous king who travels to the ends of the earth—not for personal glory, but solely to secure resources to feed his starving citizens during a crisis.
