Vadhavoor Adigalukku Upadesitha Padalam (வாதவூர் அடிகளுக்கு உபதேசித்த படலம்)
"Vadhavoor Adigalukku Upadesitha Padalam" is a foundational chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.
This chapter translates to "The Chapter where Vadhavoor Adigal was Initiated (given Upadesam)." Chronologically, this is the prequel to the stories you asked about earlier (the jackals turning into horses and the Vaigai flood). It tells the beautiful origin story of how a powerful royal minister was transformed into one of Tamil Nadu's greatest poet-saints.
The Story
1. The Prodigy of Thiruvadhavoor
In the town of Thiruvadhavoor, near Madurai, a brilliant child was born to a Brahmin family. He grew up to master all the scriptures, arts, and statecraft. Recognizing his immense intellect, King Arimardhana Pandiyan appointed him as his Chief Minister and gave him the prestigious title Thennavan Brahmarayan. However, despite his wealth and power, the minister's heart constantly yearned for spiritual liberation and a true Guru.
2. The Royal Mission
The King needed to strengthen his army and heard that fine Arabian horses had arrived at the eastern ports. He gave his trusted minister a massive treasury of gold and sent him with a grand retinue to purchase the horses.
3. The Calling at Thirupperunturai
On his journey to the coast, the minister passed through a town called Thirupperunturai (modern-day Avudaiyarkoil). As he approached, he heard the mesmerizing sound of Vedic hymns and holy chants. Drawn by an irresistible spiritual pull, he halted his royal procession and went to investigate.
4. The Guru Under the Kurunthai Tree
In a serene grove, seated beneath a sacred Kurunthai tree, he saw a radiant, majestic Guru surrounded by disciples. This was no ordinary teacher; it was Lord Shiva Himself, who had taken the form of a human Guru specifically to claim His most beloved devotee.
5. The Divine Initiation (Upadesam)
The moment the minister's eyes met the Guru's, all his worldly attachments vanished. He stripped off his royal jewels and silk robes, dressed in a humble loincloth, and fell at the Guru's feet, weeping tears of joy. Lord Shiva placed His lotus feet on the minister's head and initiated him (Upadesam), imparting the supreme spiritual knowledge (Shiva Gnanam) and the sacred five-syllable mantra (Panchaksharam).
6. The Birth of Manickavasagar
Overwhelmed by divine grace, the minister spontaneously began to sing soul-stirring, highly philosophical Tamil hymns in praise of the Lord. His words were so precious and emotionally profound that Lord Shiva gave him the name Manickavasagar—meaning "He whose words are like rubies."
7. The Aftermath
Lord Shiva eventually vanished, instructing Manickavasagar to stay back and build a temple. Completely forgetting King Arimardhana Pandiyan, the horses, and his royal duties, Manickavasagar used every single gold coin from the King's treasury to build the magnificent, structurally unique Shiva temple that still stands at Thirupperunturai today. He spent the rest of the money feeding Shiva devotees.
(When the King eventually found out the gold was gone, he ordered Manickavasagar's arrest, which directly led to Manickavasagar praying for help, and Lord Shiva performing the Nari-to-Pari miracle.)
Significance and Legacy
-
The Power of the Guru: This chapter highlights a core tenet of Shaiva Siddhanta: God Himself appears in the form of a Guru to rescue a mature soul from the cycle of illusion and karma.
-
The Thiruvasagam: This event marks the birth of the Thiruvasagam (The Sacred Utterances), a collection of hymns composed by Manickavasagar that are considered the absolute pinnacle of devotional Tamil literature. A famous Tamil proverb says, "He who is not melted by the Thiruvasagam will not be melted by any Vasagam (scripture)."
-
Avudaiyarkoil Temple: The temple Manickavasagar built at Thirupperunturai (Avudaiyarkoil) is unique in Tamil architecture. In honor of this story, the presiding deity is not a traditional Lingam, but a formless base (Avudaiyar), and the temple places a massive emphasis on Lord Shiva in the form of the Guru (Dakshinamurthy).
