Attamasithi Upadesitha Padalam (அட்டமாசித்தி உபதேசித்த படலம்)

"Attamasithi Upadesitha Padalam" is the 33rd chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where the Eight Great Siddhis were Taught." It is a profound story that begins in the celestial realm of Kailash and concludes on Earth, emphasizing the importance of attentiveness, respect for a Guru, and the supreme power of Goddess Parvati.

The Story

1. The Celestial Gathering at Kailash

In the divine realm of Mount Kailash, Lord Shiva was seated beneath the sacred banyan tree, teaching cosmic truths and dharma to great sages like Sanaka. Goddess Parvati sat lovingly by His side, folding betel leaves (Vetrilai) and handing them to the Lord.

2. The Request of the Krittika Maidens

During this peaceful gathering, the six Krittika maidens (Karthigai Pengal—the celestial women who had nursed the infant Lord Muruga) arrived. They bowed before Lord Shiva and requested Him to teach them the Ashtama Siddhis (the eight great mystical or supernatural powers).

3. The Forgotten Lesson and the Curse

Lord Shiva pointed to Goddess Parvati and told the maidens that She is the ultimate embodiment of Parashakthi. He explained that all the Siddhis constantly serve Her, and if they simply meditated upon the Goddess, they would naturally attain these powers. He then began to verbally instruct them on the deep nature of the Siddhis.

However, the Krittika maidens were distracted. Through carelessness and a lack of focus, they failed to listen properly and instantly forgot the divine teachings. Angered by their lack of respect and concentration toward a Guru's words, Lord Shiva cursed them: "Since you stood like unfeeling stones while receiving spiritual instruction, you shall fall to Earth and remain as solid rocks at a place called Pattamangai for a thousand divine years!"

4. The Plea for Forgiveness

Realizing their grave mistake, the maidens wept and begged for redemption (Vimocanam). The Lord, whose anger is always followed by mercy, promised: "After a thousand years have passed, I will come to Pattamangai in the form of a teacher (Guru). I will awaken you and teach you the Siddhis once again."

5. The Awakening and the Upadesam (Teaching)

The six maidens fell to Earth at Pattamangai (a village near Madurai) and turned into stones, eventually getting covered by fallen leaves and fruits over the centuries.

Exactly one thousand years later, Lord Shiva (Somasundarar) appeared at the spot in the majestic form of a teacher. He awakened the stones, restoring the Krittika maidens to their original celestial forms. They fell at His feet in absolute devotion.

Placing His hands on their heads, Lord Shiva initiated them once again, carefully explaining the exact nature of the Ashtama Siddhis. Following His instruction, they deeply meditated upon Goddess Parvati, mastered the eight mystical powers, and returned triumphantly to Mount Kailash.

The Eight Siddhis (Ashtama Siddhis)

In this chapter, Lord Shiva formally lists and explains the eight supreme yogic powers to the maidens:

  • Anima (அணிமா): The ability to shrink one's body to the size of an atom.

  • Mahima (மகிமா): The ability to expand one's body to an infinitely large, cosmic size.

  • Garima (கரிமா): The ability to become infinitely heavy.

  • Laghima (லகிமா): The ability to become almost weightless.

  • Prapti (பிராத்தி): The ability to travel anywhere instantly and obtain anything desired.

  • Prakamya (பிராகாமியம்): The ability to realize whatever one desires and move through the elements freely.

  • Isatva (ஈசத்துவம்): Absolute lordship and the power to command.

  • Vashitva (வசித்துவம்): The power to subjugate, fascinate, and bring all creatures (including Devas, Asuras, and beasts) under one's control.

Significance and Legacy

  • The Reverence for the Guru: The primary moral of this chapter is the strict discipline required in the Guru-Shishya (teacher-student) tradition. Divine knowledge cannot be obtained with a distracted or arrogant mind; it requires absolute focus and respect.

  • The Supremacy of Shakti: Lord Shiva explicitly states that the eight mystical powers are merely servants to Goddess Parvati. It implies that rather than chasing magical powers, one should seek the grace of the Divine Mother, which naturally brings all capabilities.

  • A Prelude: This chapter perfectly sets the stage for the stories in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam where Lord Shiva Himself takes the form of the "Ellam Valla Siddhar" (The All-Powerful Mystic) and performs these exact eight Siddhis on the streets of Madurai to bless His devotees.
