இரசவாதம் செய்த படலம்

சிவபெருமானது அறுபத்து நான்கு திருவிளையாடல்களில் இரசவாதம் செய்த படலம் முப்பத்தி ஆறாவது படலமாகும்.

மதுரைக்கு அருகில் திருப்பூவனம் என்னும் ஊர் ஒன்று இருந்தது. (தற்போது அது திருப்புவனம் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது). அவ்வூரில் இருந்த பூவனநாதர் என்னும் திருக்கோவில் இருந்தது. இக்கோவிலில் கணிகையர் எனப்படும் ஆடல் குலப் பெண்கள் ஆடல் பாடல்கள் பாடி இறைவனின் புகழைப் பரப்பினர். அப்பெண்களில் ஒருத்தி பொன்னனையாள். அவள் ஆடல் மற்றும் பாடல்களில் சிறந்தவளாகத் திகழ்ந்தாள். அவள் தினமும் பூவனநாதர் கோவிலுக்குச் சென்று மற்ற ஆடல் மகளிருடன் இணைந்து ஆடல் மற்றும் பாடல்கள் பாடி இறைவனின் புகழைப் பரப்புவாள். பின்னர் தன் இல்லத்திற்குச் சென்று அங்குள்ள சிவனடியார்களுக்கு அன்னதானம் செய்து எஞ்சிய உணவினை உண்பாள். இதனையே அவள் வழக்கமாகக் கொண்டிருந்தாள். அவளுக்கு தன் நாட்டியத்திற்கு அதிபதியான இறைவனாரை பொன்னால் வடிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற விருப்பம் இருந்தது. பொன்னால் இறைவனின் திருமேனியைச் செய்ய வேண்டுமானால் அதற்கு நிறையப் பணம் வேண்டும். ஆடல் பாடல் மூலம் சம்பாதித்த பணம் முழுவதும் அடியார்களுக்கு தொண்டு செய்வதிலேயே கழிந்தது. இறைவனின் திருமேனியை செய்ய பொருள் போதாமையால் அவள் ஆவல் நிறைவேறவில்லை. இரவும் பகலும் இதே ஏக்கம் கொண்டு அவள் மெலிந்தாள். பொன்னாலான இறைவனின் திருமேனியை செய்வதற்கு அருள்புரியுமாறு எப்போதும் இறைவனாரிடம் வேண்டிக் கொண்டிருந்தாள் பொன்னனையாள். மதுரை சொக்கநாதர் பொன்னனையாளின் விருப்பத்தை நிறைவேற்ற திருவுள்ளம் கொண்டார்.

சொக்கநாதர் சிவனடியாரின் வடிவம் ஏற்று சித்தராக பொன்னனையாள் இல்லத்திற்கு எழுந்தருளினார். பொன்னையாளின் இல்லத்தில் சிவனடியார்கள் எல்லோருக்கும் திருவமுதினைப் படைத்தாள். சித்தரான சிவனடியார் அமுதுண்ண இல்லத்திற்கு உட்செல்லாமல் புறக்கடையில் அமர்ந்திருந்தார். அப்போது பொன்னனையாளின் பணிப்பெண் சித்தரை திருவமுது உண்ண வருமாறு அழைத்தாள். சித்தரோ இவ்வில்லத்திற்கு உரிமையான பொன்னனையாளை அழைத்து வருமாறு கூறினார். சித்தர் கூறியதை பணிப்பெண் பொன்னனையாளிடம் தெரிவித்தாள். அதனை ஏற்று பொன்னனையாளும் சித்தர் இருப்பிடத்திற்கு வந்தாள். சித்தரிடம் ஐயா தாங்கள் விரும்பிய வண்ணம் தங்களுக்கு பணிவிடை செய்கிறேன். தாங்கள் தயவுகூர்ந்து திருவமுது உண்ண வாருங்கள் என்று கோரிக்கை வைத்தாள். சித்தரும் பொன்னனையாளிடம் பெண்ணே உன்னுடைய முகம் வாடியும் உடல் மெலிந்தும் இருப்பதற்கான காரணம் என்ன? என்று கேட்டார். பொன்னனையாளும் பொன்னாலான இறைவனின் திருமேனியைச் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்ற தன்னுடைய விருப்பத்தைத் தெரிவித்து அதனாலேயே தான் முகம்வாடி உடல் மெலிந்து இருப்பதாகக் கூறினாள். இதனைக் கேட்டதும் சித்தர் சரி உன்னுடைய வீட்டில் உள்ள வெள்ளி இரும்பு செம்பு வெண்கல ஈயப் பொருட்களை கொண்டு வா நான் அதனை எல்லாம் பொன்னாக மாற்றித் தருகிறேன். அதனைக் கொண்டு நீ உன் விருப்பத்தை நிறைவேற்றிக் கொள்ளலாம் என்று கூறினார்.

பொன்னனையாள் ஆச்சர்யம் கலந்த குழப்பத்துடன் அவளின் வீட்டில் இருந்த உலோகப் பொருட்களை எடுத்து வந்து அவரிடம் கொடுத்தாள். சித்தர் ஒவ்வொன்றிற்கும் விபூதியிட்டு நெருப்பில் வைத்தார். இந்த பாத்திரங்களை நாளை காலையில் அவைகளை எடுத்துப்பார். எல்லாம்  தங்கமாக இருக்கும். உன் விருப்பப்படி இறைவனின் பிரதிமை செய்து கொள் என்று கூறினார். அவரை உணவருந்திப் போகும்படியும் தாங்கள் இங்கு தங்கியிருந்து பொன்னாலான இறைவனின் திருமேனியைக் காண வேண்டும் என்றும் கேட்டுக் கொண்டாள். அதற்கு சித்தர் நான் மதுரையில் வசிப்பவன். என்னை சித்தன் என்பார்கள். முதலில் நீ உன்னுடைய பணிகளை முதலில் முடி. நீ விரும்பும் போது இங்கு வருவேன் என்று கூறி மறைந்தருளினார். பொன்னனையாளும் அவ்வுலோகப் பொருட்களை மறுநாள் காலையில் பார்க்க அப்பொருட்கள் பொன்னாக மின்னின. இதனைக் கண்டதும் பொன்னனையாள் இச்செயலை சாதாரணமானவர்கள் செய்ய இயலாது. சிவனடியாராக வந்தது சொக்கநாதரே என்பதை உணர்ந்தாள். பின்னர் பொன்னாலாகிய இறைவனின் திருமேனியை உண்டாக்கினாள். அத்திருமேனியின் அழகில் சொக்கிய பொன்னனையாள் திருமேனியைக் கிள்ளி அழகிய பிரானோ என்று கொஞ்சி முத்தமிட்டாள். பொன்னனையாள் கிள்ளியதால் ஏற்பட்ட நகக்கீறலும் அழகிய பிரான் என்ற பெயரும் இறைவனுக்கு நிலைத்து விட்டன.

சிவபெருமான் இந்த திருவிளையாடலை செய்து இதன் மூலம் உலகிற்கு அளித்த நன்மை:

தான் செய்கிறோம் என்ற எண்ணம் இல்லாமல் தனக்கு பொன்னால் செய்யப்பட்ட இறைவன் வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் இல்லாமல் தூய்மையான பக்தியில் அன்புடன் இறைவனை அனுகினால் தன் பக்தர்களின் நியாயமான கோரிக்கைகளை இறைவனார் உறுதியாக நிறைவேற்றுவார் என்பதை இந்த திருவிளையாடல் மூலம் அனைவருக்கும் உணர்த்தினார்.

Rasavatham Seitha Padalam (ரசவாதம் செய்த படலம்)

"Rasavatham Seitha Padalam" is the 36th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where Alchemy was Performed." (Rasavatham refers to the ancient science and mysticism of alchemy—specifically, turning base metals into pure gold). It is a beautiful story about spiritual transformation and the incredible intimacy of true devotion.

The Story

1. The Devout Temple Dancer

In the city of Madurai lived a temple dancer (from the Padiyilar or Devadasi community) named Ponnanaiyal. Unlike those who sought wealth or royal favor, her heart belonged entirely to Lord Somasundarar. She dedicated her entire life and all her earnings to a single holy cause: feeding the devotees of Lord Shiva.

2. The Unfulfilled Dream

Ponnanaiyal harbored a massive, lifelong dream. She desperately wanted to cast a magnificent, solid gold idol of Lord Shiva so that it could be taken out in grand processions for everyone to worship. She had even prepared the perfect wax mold for the casting. However, because she spent all her money feeding the poor and the devotees, she had no gold. All she had in her house were cheap brass, copper, lead, and iron utensils. She wept bitterly, thinking her dream would never be fulfilled.

3. The Divine Alchemist

Moved by her pure, selfless desire, Lord Shiva decided to intervene. He took the disguise of a wandering Siddhar (a mystic or holy man) and knocked on her door. Seeing the holy man, Ponnanaiyal welcomed him respectfully and fed him. The Siddhar noticed her underlying sadness and asked her why she was crying. She poured her heart out, explaining her impossible dream of casting a golden idol.

4. The Miracle of Rasavatham

The Siddhar smiled and told her not to worry. He instructed her to gather every single piece of cheap metal in her house—old brass pots, lead vessels, iron tools, and copper plates—and melt them all together in a large furnace.

Once the base metals were completely melted into a glowing, bubbling liquid, the Siddhar took out a pinch of sacred ash (or in some versions, a mystic herb) and threw it into the crucible. Instantly, a miraculous chemical and divine reaction occurred (Rasavatham). The impure, dark molten metal transformed entirely into blinding, high-quality, pure liquid gold.

Before Ponnanaiyal could even fall at his feet to thank him, the Siddhar vanished.

5. The Pinch of Affection

Realizing that the Lord Himself had come to help her, Ponnanaiyal wept with joy. She carefully poured the molten gold into her prepared mold.

When the metal cooled and she broke the mold open, the resulting golden idol of Lord Shiva was so breathtakingly beautiful that it defied human imagination. Looking at the beautiful, shining face of the Lord, Ponnanaiyal was overcome with a wave of pure, overwhelming emotional ecstasy. Forgetting that it was a metal deity, she reached out and affectionately pinched the idol's cheek, just as a mother would playfully pinch a beautiful child.

Miraculously, the solid gold yielded to her touch as if it were soft human skin. A permanent little dent (a dimple or pinch mark) was left on the idol's cheek, sealing her pure love into the metal forever.

Significance and Legacy

• Spiritual Alchemy: In Tamil Siddha philosophy, Rasavatham (alchemy) is a profound metaphor. Just as the Siddhar turned cheap, rusted iron into pure gold, the Guru (God) touches the impure, worldly human soul and transforms it into pure, enlightened divinity.

• The Intimacy of Devotion (Bhakti): The most famous part of this story is the pinch on the cheek. It illustrates that when devotion reaches its absolute peak, the boundaries between the human and the divine dissolve. God does not want rigid, fearful worship; He melts for informal, overwhelming, and intimate love.

• Breaking Social Barriers: Once again, the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam elevates a marginalized person. The Lord bypassed kings and wealthy merchants to perform this grand miracle in the humble kitchen of a temple dancer, purely because of her selfless charity.
