Sozhanai Maduvil Veelthiya Padalam (சோழனை மடுவில் வீழ்த்திய படலம்)

"Sozhanai Maduvil Veelthiya Padalam" (sometimes written as Veettiya Padalam) is the 37th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where the Chola King was made to fall into a Pond." It is an action-packed story that demonstrates how absolute devotion can compensate for a lack of earthly military might, and how anger ultimately leads to one's own downfall.

The Story

1. The Devout King and the Weak Army

The Pandyan Kingdom was ruled by a king named Sundaresa Pada Sekara Pandiyan. As his name suggests, he was an incredibly staunch devotee of Lord Somasundarar. His devotion was so overwhelming that he spent almost all of the state's treasury on temple renovations, daily rituals, and crafting magnificent jewelry for the Lord. As a result, he severely neglected his military, leaving the Pandyan army drastically reduced in size and strength.

2. The Chola Invasion

The neighboring Chola King received intelligence about Madurai's weakened military state. Seeing a golden opportunity to conquer the Pandyan territory, he marched toward Madurai with a colossal, heavily armed military force. Compared to the massive Chola army that looked like a roaring ocean, the tiny Pandyan army looked like a feeble stream.

3. The Divine Promise

Terrified by the sheer size of the invading army, Sundaresa Pada Sekara Pandiyan realized he was hopelessly outnumbered. He rushed to the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, fell at the feet of the Lord, and desperately prayed for a solution.

An ethereal voice (Asariri) echoed from the sanctum: "Do not fear. March into the battlefield with the small army you have. I will personally come to your aid."

4. The Divine Hunter (Veduvan)

Bolstered by his faith in the Lord's words, the Pandyan King led his small force into battle. Just as the armies clashed, a mysterious and terrifying warrior entered the fray. It was Lord Shiva, disguised as a fierce tribal hunter (Veduvan). Riding a majestic horse and wielding a deadly spear, He struck fear into the hearts of the enemy, appearing like Yama (the God of Death) to the Chola forces.

The Divine Hunter launched a devastating attack, causing the massive Chola army to panic and scatter. Having broken the enemy lines, the hunter then mysteriously vanished from the battlefield.

5. The Chase and the Deep Pond (Madu)

Seeing that the terrifying hunter had disappeared, the Chola King regained his false courage. Blinded by rage and ego, he aggressively charged forward to hunt down the Pandyan King.

As the Pandyan King tactically retreated, he accidentally slipped and fell into a massive, deep pond/whirlpool (Madu) that lay in the middle of the battlefield. However, protected by the invisible grace of Lord Shiva, he safely swam across and reached the shore unharmed.

6. The Fall of the Chola King

The Chola King, furiously chasing him at full speed, completely failed to notice the treacherous waters. He charged right into the very same deep Madu along with his royal mount. Without the divine grace that protected the Pandyan King, the Chola King was dragged down into the dark depths of the pond and drowned, bringing an abrupt and definitive end to the invasion.

Overjoyed and humbled by the miraculous rescue, Sundaresa Pada Sekara Pandiyan praised Lord Shiva and went on to rule his kingdom safely and prosperously for many years.

Significance and Legacy

  • Devotion is the Greatest Armor: The story highlights that when a devotee trusts God entirely, God will fill the gaps in their earthly defenses. The King had no army because he spent his wealth on God, so God became his army.

  • The Danger of Blind Rage: The Chola King's ultimate demise wasn't directly by a weapon, but by his own blind arrogance and anger, which caused him to charge recklessly into a deadly trap.

  • The Form of the Hunter: Lord Shiva taking the form of a Veduvan (hunter) is a recurring motif in Shaivite mythology (such as in the Kiratarjuniya story with Arjuna), symbolizing God's fierce, untamed, and protective aspect.
