Keeranukku Ilakkanam Upadesitha Padalam (கீரனுக்கு இலக்கணம் உபதேசித்த படலம்)
"Keeranukku Ilakkanam Upadesitha Padalam" is the 54th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.
This chapter translates to "The Chapter where Grammar was Taught to Nakkeerar." It serves as the beautiful and humbling conclusion to one of the most famous and fiery episodes in Tamil literary mythology—the clash between the great poet Nakkeerar and Lord Shiva.
The Story
1. The Prelude: The Ultimate Argument
To understand this chapter, we must look at the preceding events. A poor poet named Dharumi was given a poem by Lord Shiva to win a royal prize. The head of the Tamil Sangam, Nakkeerar, boldly rejected the poem, claiming it had a logical flaw (arguing that women's hair does not have natural fragrance).
Lord Shiva appeared in court to defend the poem, but Nakkeerar stubbornly refused to back down, famously declaring, "Netrikann thirappinum kutram kutrame!" (Even if you open your third eye, a flaw is a flaw!). Enraged by his arrogance, Shiva slightly opened His third eye, scorching Nakkeerar. Unable to bear the heat, the poet jumped into the golden lotus tank (Potramarai Kulam) of the Meenakshi Temple.
2. The Forgiveness and the Realization
After the other poets pleaded for mercy, and Nakkeerar himself sang hymns of repentance, Lord Shiva cooled the waters and revived him. However, Lord Shiva realized that Nakkeerar's sheer arrogance and his ability to "find a fault" in a divine poem stemmed from the fact that his knowledge of Tamil grammar (Ilakkanam) was actually incomplete. To make Nakkeerar a truly perfect poet, he needed to be taught proper grammar.
3. Choosing the Master
Lord Shiva pondered who was qualified to teach advanced Tamil grammar to the head of the Sangam. Goddess Meenakshi suggested the perfect candidate: Sage Agastya (Agathiyar).
Long ago, during Shiva and Parvati's divine wedding in the Himalayas, the Earth had tilted due to the weight of all the celestial beings gathering in the North. Lord Shiva had sent Sage Agastya to the South (the Podhigai hills) to balance the Earth, blessing him with the complete mastery of the Tamil language and its grammar.
4. The Divine Summoning
Lord Shiva merely thought of Sage Agastya in His mind. Instantly understanding the Lord's command, Agastya traveled from the Podhigai hills to Madurai with his wife Lopamudra. Lord Shiva instructed the great sage to teach Nakkeerar the flawless rules of Tamil grammar.
5. The Lessons (Upadesam)
Sage Agastya gladly accepted the task. He sat down with Nakkeerar and taught him the absolute depths of Tamil grammar, covering all categories of literature, the classifications of Aham (inner life/love) and Puram (outer life/war), the types of commentaries (Kandigai and Viruthi), and the subtle nuances of poetic structure.
6. The Transformation of Nakkeerar
As Nakkeerar learned under Sage Agastya, all his doubts vanished. More importantly, he realized how many grammatical and structural errors existed in his own previous compositions. Humbled and enlightened, he immediately corrected his old poems.
He felt deep remorse for having argued so arrogantly with Lord Shiva, realizing that true knowledge brings humility, not pride. Now a master of flawless grammar, Nakkeerar went on to teach these refined rules to the rest of the Sangam poets, cementing Madurai's legacy as the ultimate seat of the Tamil language.
Significance and Legacy
-
Humility in Knowledge: The central moral of this Thiruvilaiyadal is that no matter how educated or highly placed a person is, learning is a continuous process. Arrogance is a sign of incomplete knowledge.
-
The Guru's Role: Goddess Meenakshi later asks Lord Shiva why He didn't teach Nakkeerar Himself. Shiva replies that knowledge must be imparted in a structured way through a qualified Guru, and that a student must learn to submit respectfully to a teacher.
-
Lineage of Tamil: This chapter reinforces the mythological lineage of the Tamil language: it originated from Lord Shiva, was codified and structured by Sage Agastya, and was then propagated to the world through the Sangam poets like Nakkeerar.
