Naanmada Koodal Aana Padalam (நான்மாட கூடல் ஆன படலம்)
"Naanmada Koodal Aana Padalam" is the 19th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.
This chapter translates to "The Chapter where Madurai became the City of Four Mansions/Towers (Naanmada Koodal)." It is a foundational mythological story that explains how Madurai earned one of its most famous ancient Tamil names.
The Story
1. The End of a Cosmic Cycle (Pralaya)
At the end of a grand cosmic age (Yuga), the universe faced dissolution through a massive deluge (Pralaya). Torrents of water flooded the earth, threatening to wash away all life, knowledge, and civilization. The city of Madurai, along with its sacred temple and its devoted King and citizens, faced the threat of being completely submerged and destroyed by the rising cosmic oceans.
2. The Refuge of the Devotees
As the waters began to swallow the earth, the Pandyan King and the sages of Madurai ran to the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, which stood as the final sanctuary. They fell at the feet of Lord Somasundarar and Goddess Meenakshi, crying out for protection against the devastating flood.
3. The Divine Command
Moved by the prayers of His devotees, Lord Shiva decided to preserve Madurai and the essence of Tamil civilization. He commanded the sacred city, the temple, and the surrounding holy sites to rise above the rising waters. To protect the city from the four directions, the Lord manifested His divine presence in four distinct, magnificent forms or mansions (Maadam), holding back the destructive waves.
4. The Four Mansions (Naan Maadam)
Because the Lord protected the city by establishing four grand divine fortifications or towers (Maadam) around it to block the Pralaya waters, the city became permanently known as "Naanmada Koodal" (The Gathering Place protected by Four Mansions).
5. Surviving the Deluge
While the rest of the world was submerged beneath the cosmic ocean, Madurai remained completely safe, dry, and radiant, serving as the ark that preserved human life, culture, and the Tamil language for the creation of the next Yuga.
Significance and Legacy
-
Origin of a Classic Name: Naanmada Koodal is one of the oldest historical and literary names for Madurai, frequently referenced in ancient Sangam literature alongside Koodal and Malligai Maanagar.
-
The Eternal City (Avinashi): This chapter reinforces the theological belief that Madurai is an Avinashi (indestructible) city. Even when the rest of the universe dissolves in the cosmic deluge, the divine energy of Madurai remains untouched, protected directly by Lord Shiva.
