Sangathar Kalagam Theertha Padalam (சங்கத்தார் கலகம் தீர்த்த படலம்)

"Sangathar Kalagam Theertha Padalam" is the 55th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where the dispute among the Sangam poets was resolved". It is a fascinating story that highlights how ego can cloud the judgment of even the most learned scholars, and how divine intervention is sometimes required to restore harmony.

The Story

1. The Pride of the Poets

During the time of the Madurai Tamil Sangam, there were 48 highly esteemed poets, including literary giants like Nakkeerar, Kapilar, and Paranar. As time passed, despite their immense knowledge, the poets fell victim to intellectual arrogance. Each poet began to believe that their own compositions were the absolute best, leading to intense rivalry, bitter arguments, and a massive dispute (Kalagam) that disrupted the functioning of the Sangam.

2. The Appeal to Lord Shiva

Realizing that none of them would ever yield to another, the poets marched to the Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. They prayed to Lord Sokkanathar (Shiva), pleading with Him to act as a divine judge, evaluate their poems, and definitively declare whose work was the most superior.

3. The Mute Judge

Answering their prayers, Lord Shiva appeared before them in the guise of a poet. He informed them that he would not judge them directly. Instead, He pointed them to a wealthy merchant in Madurai named Dhanapathi and his wife Dharuma Salini. This couple had a young, mute son named Uruthira Sanman (who was secretly an incarnation of Lord Murugan). Lord Shiva declared that this mute boy was the only judge capable of perfectly evaluating the depths of their Tamil poetry.

4. The Silent Verdict

The bewildered poets brought the mute boy, Uruthira Sanman, to the Sangam and seated him on the judge's pedestal. One by one, the poets began to recite their finest works.

Since the boy could not speak, his judgment was entirely physical.

  • When he heard poetry that was mediocre, flawed, or lacking true emotional depth, he sat completely frozen, showing no reaction.

  • When he heard good poetry, he would slightly nod his head.

  • But when Kapilar, Paranar, and Nakkeerar recited their flawless verses, the boy was overcome with divine ecstasy. He nodded his head vigorously, his hair stood on end, and tears of joy streamed down his face.

5. The Resolution

Through the mute boy's profound, physical reactions, the ultimate truth was revealed. The poets realized the true hierarchy of their literary merits. Humbled by the pure, unbiased judgment of the divine boy, their egos were instantly shattered. The 48 poets accepted their respective standings, the great dispute was finally resolved, and harmony returned to the Madurai Tamil Sangam.

Significance and Legacy

  • The Dangers of Intellectual Ego: The story serves as a moral lesson that knowledge and talent can easily be tainted by pride. True wisdom requires humility.

  • The Purity of Art: The mute boy's reaction symbolizes that true art is not judged by complex debates or loud arguments, but by the raw, unspoken emotional resonance it creates in a pure listener.

  • Elevation of the Great Trio: This chapter formally establishes Nakkeerar, Kapilar, and Paranar as the unquestioned greatest among the Sangam era poets in Tamil literary tradition.
