Karikuruvikku Upadesam Seitha Padalam (கரிக்குருவிக்கு உபதேசம் செய்த படலம்)

"Karikuruvikku Upadesam Seitha Padalam" is the 47th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where Spiritual Instruction was given to a Blackbird." It is a touching story that, much like the story of the crane, shows that Lord Shiva's grace extends to the tiniest and seemingly most insignificant of creatures.

The Story

1. The Bullied Bird

In a forest, there lived a small, weak blackbird known in Tamil as a Karikuruvi (often identified as a type of drongo or black sparrow). Because of its small size and lack of strength, it was constantly harassed, pecked at, and chased away by larger, aggressive birds like crows. The little bird lived a life of constant fear and misery.

2. The Awakening of Past Karma

Though it was born as a lowly bird in this life due to past karmic debts, the bird had performed some good deeds in its previous births. Because of this residual good karma, the bird suddenly attained spiritual clarity. It realized that the only way to escape its cycle of suffering and fear was to seek the divine protection of Lord Somasundarar (Shiva) in the sacred city of Madurai.

3. The Pilgrimage and Penance

Determined to change its fate, the tiny bird flew all the way to Madurai. It went to the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, bathed in the holy waters of the Potramarai Kulam (Golden Lotus Tank), and worshipped the Lord. For three continuous days, the bird fasted completely and devotedly flew around the main sanctum (performing Pradakshina), praying for strength and salvation.

4. The Divine Initiation (Upadesam)

Moved by the intense devotion of such a tiny, fragile creature, Lord Shiva appeared before the bird. With immense compassion, the Lord gently picked the bird up in His hands. He then leaned in and whispered the supreme, fear-destroying Mrityunjaya Mantra directly into the bird's ear.

This divine initiation (Upadesam) instantly burned away all of the bird's past sins, ignorance, and fear. The little bird was filled with immense spiritual and physical strength.

5. The Transformation into 'Valiyan'

Lord Shiva blessed the bird and gave it a new name: "Valiyan" (The Strong/Mighty One).

The Lord then asked the bird what boon it desired. The bird, remembering the suffering of its kind, prayed: "Oh Lord, please grant that my species shall never again be bullied or defeated by crows or other larger birds. We must be fearless."

Lord Shiva granted the boon. He decreed that from that day forward, the Valiyan bird would have the courage and strength to chase away birds much larger than itself, and at the end of its life, it would attain eternal liberation (Mukthi).

Significance and Legacy

  • A Phenomenon of Nature: This chapter provides a mythological explanation for a real-world ornithological phenomenon. The Karikuruvi or Valiyan is commonly identified as the Black Drongo (King Crow). Despite its small size, the drongo is famously aggressive and fearless, known to fiercely attack and chase away much larger predatory birds like crows, eagles, and hawks to protect its territory.

  • The Power of Upadesam: The story emphasizes that a true Guru's initiation (the whispering of the mantra) can instantly transform the weakest being into the strongest. Fear is eradicated by divine knowledge.

  • Compassion for the Weak: It reinforces the idea that God does not favor only wealthy kings or learned sages. He is equally accessible to a terrified, bullied little bird, proving that pure devotion is the only qualification needed to receive divine grace.
