Naaraiku Mukthi Kudutha Padalam (நாரைக்கு முக்தி கொடுத்த படலம்)
"Naaraiku Mukthi Kudutha Padalam" (also known as Naaraiku Mukthi Alitha Padalam) is the 48th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.
This chapter translates to "The Chapter where Salvation was Granted to a Crane." It is a beautiful, deeply philosophical story that emphasizes the supreme virtue of Ahimsa (non-violence) and explains a unique, real-world characteristic of the Madurai Meenakshi Temple's sacred tank.
The Story
1. The Crane's Quest
In a dense forest far away, there lived a crane (Naarai). One day, while resting near a water body, the crane overheard a group of wandering sages talking about the immense spiritual power of the city of Madurai. They spoke of the Potramarai Kulam (the Golden Lotus Tank) inside the temple, declaring that anyone who bathed in its holy waters and worshipped Lord Somasundarar (Shiva) would attain eternal salvation.
Inspired by the sages' words, the crane developed a deep yearning for spiritual liberation. It flew a great distance to reach the sacred city of Madurai.
2. The Penance
Upon arriving at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, the crane bathed in the Golden Lotus Tank. It then perched on the steps of the tank, closed its eyes, and began to perform intense, focused penance (Tapas) in devotion to Lord Shiva. It spent its days in deep meditation, completely ignoring its physical needs.
3. The Ultimate Test of Nature
As days passed, the crane became ravenously hungry. By its very nature, a crane is a predatory bird whose instinct is to hunt aquatic life. In those ancient days, the Potramarai Kulam was teeming with fish and frogs.
The fish swam right up to the steps where the crane was meditating, making them incredibly easy prey. However, the crane realized that the tank was a sacred space of the Lord. To hunt and kill a living being inside this holy temple would be a grave sin of violence. Demonstrating extraordinary self-control and a strict adherence to Ahimsa, the starving bird refused to eat the fish and continued its meditation, willing to die of hunger rather than commit a sin.
4. The Divine Vision and Salvation
Deeply moved by a mere bird's incredible willpower, pure devotion, and commitment to non-violence, Lord Shiva and Goddess Meenakshi appeared before the crane. They praised its spiritual maturity, which surpassed even that of many human sages, and immediately granted the bird Mukthi (eternal liberation from the cycle of birth and death).
5. The Crane's Noble Boon
Before its soul departed for the heavenly abode, the benevolent crane made one final, selfless request to Lord Shiva. It prayed: "Oh Lord, I was able to resist my natural urge to hunt, but other birds that come to this holy tank might not have the same willpower. They might commit the sin of killing in this sacred place and incur bad karma. Therefore, please grant that this tank shall never harbor fish, frogs, or any aquatic prey from this day forward."
Lord Shiva smiled and granted the crane's thoughtful boon.
Significance and Legacy
-
A Living Miracle: This Thiruvilaiyadal explains a famous, real-world phenomenon. To this day, the Potramarai Kulam (Golden Lotus Tank) inside the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple has no fish or frogs in it. Despite being a large, open body of water that has existed for centuries, marine life naturally does not survive or breed in this specific tank—fulfilling the crane's boon.
-
Ahimsa (Non-Violence): The story teaches that spiritual greatness is not limited to humans. A creature's ability to conquer its own primal instincts and practice non-violence is the highest form of worship.
-
Selfless Prayer: The crane did not ask for anything for itself in the end; it asked for a boon that would protect other creatures from committing sins, highlighting the purity of a liberated soul.
