Kundodaranukku Annamitta Padalam (குண்டோதரனுக்கு அன்னமிட்ட படலம்)

"Kundodaranukku Annamitta Padalam" is the 7th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where Food was Served to Kundodaran." It is one of the most famous, awe-inspiring, and entertaining chapters in the Madurai Kaandam, showcasing an epic battle of appetites between a celestial giant and the infinite resources of the Divine.

The Story

1. The Arrival of Kundodaran

As preparations for the grand wedding (Thirukalyanam) of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Somasundarar were underway, various celestial beings and attendants of Lord Shiva arrived in Madurai. Among them was Kundodaran, a fierce and massive gana (celestial attendant of Lord Shiva) who was legendary for one particular trait: an insatiable, bottomless appetite.

2. The Challenge of Hunger

Upon arriving in Madurai, Kundodaran approached Lord Shiva and complained of a raging, unbearable hunger, asking for food. Lord Shiva smiled and told him to go ahead and eat whatever he desired from the royal kitchens and city supplies.

Kundodaran sat down and began to eat. He consumed mountains of rice, lakes of payasam, curries, and entire harvests prepared for the wedding guests. Yet, within moments, his stomach digested everything, and his hunger flared up even more fiercely. He devoured all the food prepared for the entire city, but his stomach remained completely empty, and his hunger grew so intense that it threatened to burn up the earth with digestive fire (Jataragni).

3. Panic and Appeal to the Lord

Alarmed that Kundodaran's cosmic hunger was about to consume the city and turn everything to ash, the sages and attendants ran back to Lord Shiva, begging Him to save them.

4. The Divine Solution

Lord Shiva, ever compassionate and playful, provided a brilliant solution. He instructed Goddess Annapoornani (the goddess of nourishment) and directed the River Vaigai to supply an unending stream of water and food. The Lord created a miraculous, inexhaustible supply of food where every morsel eaten instantly multiplied and satisfied the giant's hunger.

5. Satiating the Giant

With the infinite supply of divine food provided directly by Lord Shiva and Goddess Meenakshi, Kundodaran’s bottomless stomach was finally filled. Satisfied, calm, and deeply grateful, the giant bowed to the Lord, bringing an end to the terrifying hunger threat.

Significance and Legacy

  • The Power of Annadhanam: This chapter humorously yet profoundly emphasizes the sacred Hindu virtue of Annadhanam (feeding the hungry) and highlights that the Divine is the ultimate provider who can sustain even the most impossible needs.

  • A Prelude to the Wedding Feast: It sets up the massive logistical preparations required for feeding the celestial hordes, leading directly into the subsequent chapters detailing the grand feasts and wedding arrangements.
