Thanneer Pandhal Vaitha Padalam (தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல் வைத்த படலம்)

"Thanneer Pandhal Vaitha Padalam" is the 35th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where the Water Kiosk was Established." It is a story of political betrayal, a massive battle, and how Lord Shiva became a humble water-server to protect the army of a righteous king.

The Story

1. The Royal Friendship and the Betrayal

King Rajendra Pandiyan ruled Madurai righteously. He had cultivated a great friendship with the neighboring Chola King, Kaadu Vettiya Cholan, exchanging precious gifts and maintaining peace. To strengthen this bond, the Chola King decided to give his daughter in marriage to Rajendra Pandiyan.

However, Rajendra Pandiyan had a treacherous and ambitious younger brother named Rajasimhan. Upon hearing of this marriage proposal, Rajasimhan rushed to the Chola capital (Kanchipuram). Through deceit and manipulation, he convinced the Chola King to give the princess in marriage to him instead of his older brother.

2. The Unholy Alliance

Once the marriage was completed, the new son-in-law (Rajasimhan) and the Chola King formed an unholy alliance. Driven by greed and a desire to usurp the Pandyan throne, they turned against Rajendra Pandiyan and marched toward Madurai with a colossal, heavily armed military force.

3. The Battle and the Scorching Heat

Rajendra Pandiyan, deeply hurt by his brother's betrayal, prayed to Lord Somasundarar (Shiva) and marched his army to meet the invaders. By the grace of Lord Shiva, the relatively smaller Pandyan army appeared magically magnified, intimidating the Chola forces.

A fierce and bloody battle erupted. However, it was the peak of summer. The scorching sun and the intense physical combat completely drained both armies. The soldiers on both sides were dying not just from weapons, but from severe dehydration and exhaustion. There was no water source in sight.

4. The Divine Water Server (Thanneer Pandhal)

Seeing the Pandyan soldiers collapsing from extreme thirst, Lord Somasundarar performed a Thiruvilaiyadal. Right in the middle of the Pandyan army's camp, a beautiful Thanneer Pandhal (a traditional water-serving kiosk or canopy) miraculously appeared.

Lord Shiva Himself took the disguise of a humble water-server. Standing inside the canopy, He tirelessly served cool, sweet, and refreshing water to every single soldier of the Pandyan army.

5. The Victory

Drinking the divine water, the Pandyan soldiers were instantly cured of their exhaustion. They felt a surge of unearthly energy and renewed strength. On the other hand, the Chola army and Rajasimhan's forces, deprived of any water in the scorching heat, fainted and collapsed. Unable to fight, the invading army was utterly crushed.

Both the Chola King and the treacherous brother, Rajasimhan, were captured as prisoners of war and brought before Rajendra Pandiyan.

6. The King's Forgiveness

Demonstrating the true nobility of a Shiva devotee, Rajendra Pandiyan refused to execute them. He forgave the Chola King, generously gifted him elephants, chariots, and wealth, and sent him back to his kingdom. He also forgave his younger brother, stripping him of his arrogant ambitions but allowing him to live peacefully.

Significance and Legacy

  • The Virtue of Serving Water: In Tamil culture and Hindu dharma, offering drinking water to the thirsty (Thaneer Dharmam) is considered one of the highest forms of charity. Lord Shiva Himself taking the role of a water-server elevates this humble act to a divine status.

  • Forgiveness Over Vengeance: The conclusion of the story highlights that a true devotee does not seek petty revenge. Despite his brother's massive betrayal, the King showed grace and forgiveness.

  • God's Direct Support: The story reinforces the recurring theme in the Puranam that when a righteous devotee is pushed into a war they did not want, God will personally intervene on the battlefield to ensure their victory.
