Varagunanukku Sivalogam Kattiya Padalam (வரகுணனுக்குச் சிவலோகம் காட்டிய படலம்)
"Varagunanukku Sivalogam Kattiya Padalam" is the 40th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.
This chapter translates to "The Chapter where Sivalogam was Shown to Varagunan." It is a beautiful, two-part story that first deals with the redemption of an accidental sin and then culminates in the King receiving the ultimate divine vision without ever having to leave his physical body or his city.
The Story
1. The Unintended Sin
King Varaguna Pandiyan was a righteous ruler of Madurai and an ardent devotee of Lord Somasundarar (Shiva). One evening, the King was returning to the city on horseback after a hunting expedition. In the darkness of the night, his swift horse (named Kanavattam) accidentally stepped on a Brahmin who was sleeping on the path. The Brahmin died instantly, but the King, unaware of the tragedy in the dark, rode back to his palace.
The next morning, citizens brought the lifeless body to the palace. Horrified and deeply remorseful, the King provided wealth to the man's family and ensured proper final rites were performed. However, the unintended act of killing a Brahmin afflicted the King with a terrible, tormenting karmic curse known as Brahmahatti Dosham.
2. The Divine Instruction
The curse caused the King immense physical and mental suffering. He constantly prayed to Lord Somasundarar for relief. One day, an ethereal voice (Asariri) echoed from the sanctum: "Do not fear. The Chola King will soon invade your kingdom. You must fight him, defeat him, and chase him all the way to his border town of Thiruvidaimarudur. There, your sin will be cleansed."
3. The Chase to Thiruvidaimarudur
Exactly as predicted, the Chola King invaded the Pandyan kingdom. Varaguna Pandiyan fought fiercely, routed the enemy, and chased the fleeing Chola forces up to the temple town of Thiruvidaimarudur (near Kumbakonam).
There, the King entered the grand Mahalingaswamy Temple through the Eastern Entrance. The terrifying Brahmahatti spirit that had been haunting him could not enter the sacred temple grounds; it stayed outside the eastern gate, waiting to possess him again when he came out.
After the King worshipped Lord Mahalingaswamy, a divine voice commanded him: "Exit through the Western Entrance and return to Madurai." The King obeyed. The Brahmahatti spirit remained endlessly waiting at the eastern gate, and Varaguna Pandiyan was permanently freed from his curse.
4. The Ultimate Request
Purified and filled with overwhelming gratitude, Varaguna Pandiyan returned to Madurai and ruled peacefully. On the auspicious night of Maha Shivaratri, his devotion reached a fever pitch. He went to the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple and prayed, "Oh Lord, scriptures say that your celestial abode, Sivalogam (Mount Kailash), is the ultimate realm. I do not want to wait until my death to see it. Please bless my mortal eyes with the vision of Sivalogam right here!"
5. The Descent of Sivalogam
Moved by the pure, childlike longing of His devotee, Lord Shiva decided to fulfill the request. He commanded Nandi (the divine bull) to transport the entire realm of Sivalogam to Madurai.
Miraculously, the earthly city of Madurai transformed. To the blessed eyes of King Varaguna Pandiyan, the temple became Mount Kailash. He saw the dazzling, unearthly light, the celestial beings (Ganas, Devas, and Sages), and right at the center, the breathtaking, majestic vision of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati seated in their supreme cosmic forms.
The King wept tears of absolute ecstasy, realizing he had achieved the ultimate spiritual liberation while still alive. After blessing the King, the vision vanished, returning Madurai to its earthly state.
Significance and Legacy
-
The Thiruvidaimarudur Tradition: This Thiruvilaiyadal is the origin of a famous, real-world temple practice. Even today, thousands of devotees visiting the Mahalingaswamy Temple in Thiruvidaimarudur strictly enter through the main eastern entrance and exit through the western entrance to symbolically leave their sins (doshas) behind, mirroring Varaguna Pandiyan's escape.
-
Bhooloka Sivalogam: Because Lord Shiva brought His celestial abode to the city for the King, Madurai earned the prestigious spiritual title of Bhooloka Sivalogam (Sivalogam on Earth).
-
Intent vs. Karma: The story philosophically addresses karma. Even though the King did not intend to kill the man, the physical action still carried a karmic weight (Brahmahatti) that had to be resolved. However, God's grace provides a way out of even the most inescapable karmic debts.
