Vanniyum Kinarum Lingamum Azhaitha Padalam (வன்னியும் கிணறும் லிங்கமும் அழைத்த படலம்)
"Vanniyum Kinarum Lingamum Azhaitha Padalam" is a famous chapter from the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam, a classic Tamil literary work written by Paranjothi Munivar. This text details the 64 divine, miraculous plays (Thiruvilaiyadals) performed by Lord Shiva (as Lord Sundareswarar) in the ancient city of Madurai.
This specific chapter translates to "The Chapter where the Vanni Tree, the Well, and the Lingam were Called as Witnesses."
The Story
1. The Marriage at Thiruppurambiyam
The story revolves around a young merchant and his cousin. The boy was promised the girl in marriage by her parents. Unfortunately, before the marriage could take place, her parents passed away, leaving her an orphan. Honoring his uncle's wish, the young man took her on a pilgrimage, eventually reaching the town of Thiruppurambiyam (near modern-day Kumbakonam). There, he married her at the local Shiva temple.
The only witnesses to their solitary wedding were:
-
A Vanni Tree (Sami tree)
-
The Temple Well
-
The Shiva Lingam
2. The Conflict in Madurai
After the marriage, the couple returned to Madurai. The merchant already had a first wife, who grew deeply jealous of the young woman. To ruin her reputation, the first wife and her relatives began spreading vicious rumors, claiming the young woman was never legally married and questioning her chastity. They demanded proof of her marriage.
3. The Divine Witnesses
Heartbroken and utterly helpless, the young woman went to the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple and cried before Lord Sundareswarar, pleading with Him to prove her innocence and honor.
Answering the desperate prayers of His true devotee, Lord Shiva performed a miracle. Overnight, He transported the exact Vanni Tree, the Well, and the Shiva Lingam from the Thiruppurambiyam temple all the way to the Madurai temple to stand as physical witnesses to her marriage.
4. The Resolution
Seeing the miraculous appearance of the tree, well, and Lingam, the relatives and the people of Madurai were stunned. They realized the woman's purity and the divine grace she held. The jealous first wife asked for forgiveness, and the young woman's honor was permanently restored.
Significance and Legacy
-
Devotion and Justice: The story emphasizes that God will go to any lengths—even altering the laws of nature—to protect the honor, truth, and dignity of a true devotee.
-
Physical Evidence: Even today, devotees visiting the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple can see a Vanni tree, a well, and a Lingam in the temple corridors, which are traditionally believed to be the very same divine witnesses brought by Lord Sundareswarar.
