Kadal Suvara Vel Vitta Padalam (கடல் சுவற வேல் விட்ட படலம்)

"Kadal Suvara Vel Vitta Padalam" is the 13th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where the Vel (Lance) was Thrown to Dry Up the Sea." It is a dramatic and heroic story that illustrates how Lord Shiva protected the Pandyan kingdom from a devastating ocean deluge orchestrated out of divine jealousy.

The Story

1. The Ninety-Six Sacrifices

During the reign of King Ukkira Pandiyan (the powerful son of Lord Somasundarar and Goddess Meenakshi), the kingdom flourished with absolute peace, prosperity, and righteousness. Wishing to ensure that the land's prosperity never waned, the King successfully performed 96 great Ashwamedha Yajnas (horse sacrifices).

2. Indra's Insecurity and Plot

According to ancient lore, if a mortal king successfully completed 100 Ashwamedha sacrifices, he would become eligible to attain Indra's celestial throne. Fearing that his position as the King of the Devas was in jeopardy, Indra grew fiercely envious of Ukkira Pandiyan.

Determined to stop the King from completing his remaining four sacrifices, Indra devised a malicious plan. He summoned Varunan (the God of the Ocean/Waters) and ordered him to unleash a massive, destructive deluge to flood and completely submerge the city of Madurai.

3. The Midnight Deluge

Complying with Indra's command, Varunan summoned the mighty ocean waters in the dead of night. A colossal, terrifying wall of seawater rose up like a cosmic wave (Pralaya), rushing inland with ferocious speed to swallow Madurai whole.

4. The Divine Dream

As the surging waves reached the outskirts of the city, Lord Shiva appeared in a dream to King Ukkira Pandiyan in the guise of a wise Siddhar.

The Lord gently reassured the panicked King, saying: "Do not fear the ocean's wrath. Take the divine Vel (lance/spear) that I previously gifted to you, go to the edge of the floodwaters, and hurl it directly into the sea to subdue it."

5. Throwing the Vel

Awakening from his dream and seeing the vast ocean waters threatening the city walls, the King rushed to the edge of the flood. Filled with resolve and trusting the Lord's divine instructions, he took up the sacred Vel and hurled it with all his might into the advancing waves.

6. The Sea Dries Up

The moment the divine Vel struck the water, a blinding flash of energy raced through the currents. With a sharp, cracking sound, the immense power of the weapon neutralized the flood, instantly boiling and drying up the massive body of water until the ocean receded entirely, leaving only a shallow puddle around the ankle.

Varunan's pride was crushed, and the threat to Madurai was completely eliminated. The King returned to the temple, filled with gratitude, and praised Lord Shiva for acting as the ultimate protector of the city.

Significance and Legacy

  • The Power of the Divine Weapon: This chapter highlights the significance of the divine weapons (Vel, Valai, and Chendu) bestowed by Lord Shiva upon the royal line of Madurai to safeguard the realm from celestial threats.

  • Protection Against Envy: It reinforces the core theme of the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam that no matter how powerful the ego or political/celestial conspiracy (even from Indra himself) might be, divine grace will always step in to shield righteousness.
