Naagam Eytha Padalam (நாகம் எய்த படலம்)
"Naagam Eytha Padalam" is the 28th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.
This chapter translates to "The Chapter where the Serpent Arrow was Shot." It is a dramatic and action-packed story that involves a royal crisis, a fierce archery duel, and a miraculous rescue by Lord Shiva.
The Story
1. The Accusation and the Refugee Prince
During the reign of the Pandyan King, a political crisis unfolded in a neighboring kingdom. A young prince, facing a violent coup and facing execution by his enemies, fled his homeland to save his life. Seeking a safe haven where he could not be touched, he traveled all the way to Madurai and sought political asylum under the protection of the Pandyan King. The Pandyan King graciously welcomed him, promising to protect him with his life.
2. The Ultimatum from the Enemy King
Furious that their target had escaped, the rival foreign king marched a massive, heavily armed army right up to the borders of the Pandyan kingdom. He sent a fierce ultimatum to the Pandyan King: "Surrender the refugee prince immediately, or prepare for total war and the destruction of Madurai."
The Pandyan King, bound by the ancient code of Kshatriya honor and sanctuary (refusing to betray someone who sought refuge), bravely replied, "Protecting a refugee is a king's highest duty. If you want him, you will have to fight through us."
3. The Fierce Battle
War was declared. The invading army attacked with overwhelming fury, outnumbering the Pandyan forces. A brutal, bloody battle ensued on the fields outside Madurai. Despite their courage, the Pandyan soldiers were slowly being pushed back by the sheer size of the enemy army.
4. The Serpent Arrow (Naagastram)
Seeing that regular soldiers were failing to break the Pandyan defense, the enemy king pulled out a devastating divine weapon: the Naagastram (a celestial serpent arrow).
When fired, this arrow transformed into a gigantic, venomous, fire-breathing serpent (Naagam). It slithered across the battlefield at lightning speed, spitting poison and incinerating everything in its path, heading straight to destroy the Pandyan forces and consume the refugee prince.
5. Lord Shiva's Intervention
Realizing that human weapons and ordinary armor could not stop the divine serpent arrow, the Pandyan King prayed deeply to Lord Somasundarar (Shiva) for help.
Answering the frantic prayers, Lord Shiva intervened. Taking the form of a brilliant archer, the Lord countered the enemy's attack by releasing His own supreme divine energy. With a blinding flash, the Lord neutralized the venomous serpent, turning it to ash before it could harm anyone.
6. Victory and Protection
Bolstered by the divine intervention, the Pandyan army counter-attacked with renewed vigor, completely routing the enemy forces and driving the foreign king away in utter defeat. The refugee prince was saved, and the honor of the Pandyan kingdom remained untarnished.
Significance and Legacy
-
The Sacred Duty of Sanctuary (Saranagathi): This chapter highlights the supreme cultural and ethical value placed on protecting someone who seeks refuge, even at the cost of war. The Pandyan King chose righteousness over self-preservation.
-
The Power of Divine Protection: It reinforces the recurring theme in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam that when a ruler upholds Dharma and relies on God, the Lord will personally step in to defeat supernatural or overwhelming threats.
