(I believe you are referring to the 50th chapter, which is formally known as Sundara Perambu Eitha Padalam. The name is sometimes mispronounced or simplified, but "Perambu" translates to "Great Arrow"!)

Sundara Perambu Eitha Padalam (சுந்தரப் பேரம்பு எய்த படலம்)

"Sundara Perambu Eitha Padalam" is the 50th chapter in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam.

This chapter translates to "The Chapter where the Great Arrow of Sundaran was Shot." It is a thrilling, action-packed episode showcasing Lord Shiva (Sundareswarar) stepping directly onto the battlefield as a divine archer to protect the Pandyan Kingdom from a massive foreign invasion.

The Story

1. The Weakened Army

During the reign of the Pandyan King Vangiya Sekara Pandiyan, the kingdom was spiritually rich but militarily vulnerable. The King had spent vast amounts of the state treasury on renovating temples and conducting religious charities, leaving fewer funds to expand or maintain a massive army.

2. The Chola Invasion

Sensing this weakness, the Chola King, Vikrama Cholan, allied himself with powerful Northern kings to crush the Pandyas. A colossal, combined army marched into Madurai's territory, causing widespread destruction, terrorizing citizens, and plundering cattle.

3. The King's Despair and the Divine Voice

Seeing the sheer size of the invading army, Vangiya Sekara Pandiyan realized his forces were heavily outnumbered. In desperation, he went to the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple and poured his heart out to Lord Sundareswarar, pleading for protection.

Suddenly, an ethereal voice (Asariri) boomed through the sanctum: "Do not fear! March into the battlefield with whatever army you have. I will come to your aid and ensure your victory."

4. The Battle

Bolstered by the Lord's promise, the Pandyan King led his small but brave army into the battlefield. A fierce and bloody war ensued. Despite their courage, the Pandyan soldiers were slowly being overpowered by the sheer numbers of the Chola and Northern forces. The Pandyan lines began to break, and defeat seemed imminent.

5. The Divine Hunter (Veduvar)

Just as the Chola King was about to declare victory, a mysterious and terrifying warrior entered the fray. It was Lord Shiva in the disguise of a fierce, dark-skinned tribal hunter (Veduvar), wielding a magnificent bow. He stood like a dark raincloud, radiating immense power.

6. The Arrows of 'Sundaran'

The divine hunter unleashed a devastating barrage of arrows upon the invading forces. These were no ordinary arrows; each one was a divine weapon of mass destruction (Perambu - Great Arrow). The invading soldiers noticed something astonishing—every single arrow that pierced their armor and shattered their chariots had the name "Sundaran" (சுந்தரன்) elegantly engraved on it.

Unable to withstand the wrath of the divine archer, the massive Chola and Northern armies panicked, turned their backs, and fled the battlefield in absolute terror.

7. The Victorious Smile

Having single-handedly routed the enemy, the mysterious hunter turned towards Vangiya Sekara Pandiyan, flashed a warm, knowing smile, and vanished into thin air. The King wept in gratitude, realizing that Lord Somasundarar Himself had taken up arms to defend His city and His devotee.

Significance and Legacy

  • God as the Supreme Protector: This Thiruvilaiyadal reinforces the belief that God will actively defend those who trust Him. The King prioritized his spiritual duties over military might, so God stepped in to bridge the gap.

  • The Signature Arrow: The detail of the name "Sundaran" engraved on the arrows is a beautiful touch. It wasn't just a mysterious rescue; Lord Shiva deliberately left His "calling card" so the enemy would know exactly who defeated them.

  • The Unshakable City: This chapter is one of several instances in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam where Lord Shiva physically defends the borders of Madurai, cementing its mythological status as a divinely protected city.
