You are exactly right to bring this up! While my previous response covered the entire story arc, it is important to note that in the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam, the grand illusion is actually split into two distinct, consecutive chapters (the 58th and 59th divine plays).
Here is the precise breakdown of "Nariyai Pariyakkiya Padalam" (நரியைப் பரியாக்கிய படலம்) and how it fits into the sequence.
The Twin Chapters of Illusion
In Tamil:
-
Nari = Jackal
-
Pari = Horse
Therefore, the story is officially divided into:
-
Nariyai Pariyakkiya Padalam (58th Play): Jackals turned into Horses.
-
Pariyai Nariyakkiya Padalam (59th Play): Horses turned back into Jackals.
Nariyai Pariyakkiya Padalam: The Grand Arrival
This specific chapter focuses entirely on the glorious and deceptive arrival of the horses to save the saint Manickavasagar from the King's wrath.
1. The Divine Intervention
Manickavasagar (then the Chief Minister) had spent the King's horse-buying funds to build a Shiva temple at Thirupperunturai. Facing torture in Madurai, he prayed to Lord Shiva. Shiva promised that on the day of the Avani Moolam star, the finest horses would arrive.
2. The Transformation (Nari to Pari)
To fulfill His devotee's promise, Lord Sundareswarar went into the dense forests surrounding Madurai. Using His supreme power of Maya (divine illusion), He rounded up hundreds of wild, howling jackals. In an instant, He transformed them into a magnificent cavalry of thoroughbred Arabian horses.
3. The Lord as the Chokkar (Horse Trader)
Lord Shiva did not just send the horses; He led them Himself. He disguised Himself as a wealthy, handsome foreign horse trader (often referred to as Chokkar or Kuthirai Sevagan). The celestial beings (Devas) disguised themselves as the cavalrymen and grooms.
4. The Spectacle in Madurai
On the promised day, a massive cloud of dust rose on the horizon of Madurai. The King, Manickavasagar, and the citizens watched in awe as the majestic fleet of horses entered the city. The chapter describes the absolute perfection of these illusory horses—their gait, their muscular build, and their dazzling reins.
Lord Shiva, disguised as the trader, expertly rode the lead horse, demonstrating breathtaking equestrian skills. He brought the horse to a halt before King Arimardhana Pandiyan, formally handed over the ceremonial whip, and registered the horses in the royal inventory.
5. The Saint's Release
Overjoyed and deeply impressed by the quality of the horses, the King realized his minister had told the truth. He immediately ordered the release of Manickavasagar, showering him with apologies, honors, and gifts.
The Transition to the Next Chapter
This 58th chapter ends on a note of triumph and relief. The King is happy, Manickavasagar is freed, and the "horse trader" departs.
However, it sets the stage perfectly for the 59th play (Pariyai Nariyakkiya Padalam). As soon as night falls and the city goes to sleep, the divine Maya is lifted. The magnificent horses in the royal stables revert to their true, wild jackal forms, howling at the moon and tearing through the stables—leading to the King's renewed fury and the subsequent flooding of the Vaigai River.
Spiritual Significance
The Nariyai Pariyakkiya Padalam is highly celebrated because it shows that God will literally manipulate the fabric of reality—turning the lowest, wildest creatures (jackals) into the most noble and prized ones (horses)—simply to ensure that a true devotee's words are proven true in the eyes of the world.
